Responsive Websites / Mobile Websites

A responsive website will adapt how it appears to best suit the device it is being shown on.

"Responsive" has has now been added to the collection of buzz words. However this one's set to stay as browsing on mobile devices begins to outstrip desktop usage.

In 2013 dCODA set a company policy that all websites created by us must be Responsive! This means your website will look great on a desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile device. Responsive websites display different depending on the size or shape of the screen it's being viewed on. This enables the website to select what will work best on the device so, rather than just scaling a site down to fit in a mobile phone's browser window, a site's images can be optimised to load faster, links can be made bigger or differently organised to aid navigation. Different information can be hidden or shown on different devices to suit where the user will be at the time and different behaviours (such as swiping - which only happens on touch-screen devices) can be take into account.

A version of a site completely tailored for a mobile device can also take the place of an app in a lot of cases. Development time is much faster (and therefore much cheaper) and this approach, often referred to as a "web app", is becoming quite popular.

And it's not just screens. Assitive devices such as screen readers can be taken into account and even old-fashioned paper has its place. Some sites need to have areas which can be printed - especially online shops. The site will respond to this and print out a version of the page which looks and fits best on a sheet of paper rather than just trying to copy what's on the screen.

Our clients wanted websites that worked in all shapes and sizes...we have responded!
